About me
As an artist, it is only natural to be influenced by your surroundings. As a native to the Pacific Northwest, I live in the beautiful city of Seattle, surrounded by nature and the diverse people that reside within it. I have been a member of the Northwest glassblowing community for the last twenty years and I have not only been surrounded by the thriving creatives from the area but also numerous international artists who have come to share their techniques and culture. As a result, my work is an amalgamation of all these things. It is diverse in theme, function and rooted in object making.
I often wonder if I chose glassblowing, or if it chose me. I just knew that the moment I walked into my first studio and saw what was being created I had to be a part of it. Finding glassblowing felt magical. Watching molten glass manipulated, being shaped like it was water, I knew immediately I needed to be part of that process. It provided something I had been missing: a means to create, to grow, and express myself. It became both a craft and a calling.
Equally influential has been the sense of camaraderie within the glassblowing community. Working alongside other artists has enticed me to grow beyond myself, pushed me to look inward and tuning that vision into tangible forms. It created an environment of growth and exploration, helping me define how I want to express myself as an artist.
My work reflects a range of influences and technical exploration. I’ve created vessels using classic Venetian techniques which I incorporated into my Yo-Yo series. I've sculpted dragons inspired by Seattle’s international community and my time in Japan. I've been developing art inspired by the works of Fabergé, combining the delicate complexity of Reticello with the intricate detailing for which his eggs are known for. Through each piece I strive to combine what I have lived and learned – a representation of myself and my surroundings.
My artwork represents me as a whole. Throughout my career as a maker and artist, I have been inspired by the many facets of my life. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, shaped by family and lived experiences, nostalgia inspires my most significant and meaningful work. When I’m creating, I don’t know precisely why a particular idea takes hold, I only know it must be made. I hope the emotion I pour into each piece translates to the viewer, that they feel something of what I felt making it.
This ongoing process fuels my creativity. As I create new works, my confidence as an artist continues to grow, allowing me to pursue ideas and bring pieces to life that once felt out of reach. As long as I remain inspired, I will continue pushing the boundaries of my craft.
